"Upper Smalls Falls, Rangeley, Maine"

It was a great day of painting in Rangeley late last summer when I painted with my plein air oil painting class at the Bemis Causeway and then at my final destination, Upper Smalls Falls. It is always a wonderful thing for students to witness their instructor painting along side of them. It was also a difficult plein air paint-out because we painted up against the wind all day long. That made our Smalls Falls destination so much sweater. The Smalls Falls Rest Area in Franklin County, Maine offered a more sheltered respite from the wind on our second day of the workshop. The students by this time chose many different locations along the trails, each with amazing views of the waterfalls cascading through the very colorful rocky gorge. I painted very directly with rich tones of the rough and dramatic torrent created by the rivers swollen by the late Summer Rain.
