Katahdin Studies: A Painting Workshop
- CPT 132B
add to selected courses

Workshop Description: This workshop focuses on painting small oil and/or watercolor studies on location, while exposing participants to several of Katahdin Lake's most beautiful and dramatic sites. This is an excellent way to respond to the moods of Katahdin and its alpine lake, while building up a portfolio that represents your stay there. Columbus Day weekend is the perfect time to experience the pinkish orange alpine glow in the morning and the dramatic silhouettes of the mountain at sunset. With scale that tricks the eye, foliage that overloads the senses, and a bold drama that visually plays out by the hour, the artist has a tiger by the tail. The class will help you to paint rapidly, explore the use of gestural brushstrokes, and choose ways to simplify composition. In addition to daily painting excursions, our days will include lively hands-on demonstrations, historical presentations, and personal critiques. The workshop is based at Katahdin Lake Wilderness Camps the shore of Katahdin Lake, a secluded location 28 miles from Millinocket. We will hike about 3 miles into the camps together, while our gear is brought in by air. From the camps, hiking trails lead into the Katahdin country. You will delight in the rustic comfort of the camp, a Victorian-era hunting lodge that for over one hundred years has sheltered artists including Frederic Edwin Church, Carl Sprinchorn, Marsden Hartley, and James Fitzgerald. You will be sent a detailed supply list with suggestions about planning your gear for hiking, and directions to our rendezvous site at the parking lot of the Katahdin Flight service in Baxter Park. The fee of $665 includes full lodging and meals. Cabins are single or shared. Enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis and is limited to 9. A deposit of $200 is due at the time of registration, and the balance is due by September 7. No refunds will be given if notice is received less than 20 days before the start of the course. Not subject to discounts. Students should be physically fit to hike on a variety of woodland trails. Michael Vermette holds a BFA in Painting from Maine College of Art. He paints in both oil and watercolor and has received six Best in Show Grumbacher Awards for his paintings in Maine open juried shows. In 1999 he was a Carina House Artist in Residence on Monhegan Island and an artist in residence for Acadia National Park. Michael teaches art to Native American students at the Indian Island School. His work can be found in private and corporate collections throughout New England and is represented at the Elizabeth Moss Gallery in Falmouth, ME as well as Northlight Gallery in East Millinocket, ME.

Place: Old Town High School Art Room.

Dates/Times: Wednesdays,September 6th to December 13th, 2007, 6PM to 9PM.

Course Description: This watercolor course places emphasis on acquiring painting skill and technical proficiency as a means to achieve the goal of the student's concept, or visual idea (schema) idea. The lessons are based on twelve specific techniques that are most often used by artists today and in watercolor art history. The demonstrations are designed to illustrate these visual effects and are conducted each week by the instructor. Students are then encouraged to participate in a in-class assignment to practice the newly learned technique in a risk-taking atmosphere. Students are then given an Out-of-class assignment which is to paint one painting per week utilizing that new technique. Students can paint any subject that they want to paint using photgraphs, drawings or working from direct observation. The course exposes students to watercolor artists in art history through slide presentations each week. Michael will also lead the class into a group critique of Out-of-class assignments to give the student an opportunity to develop their powers to talk about and represent their works. This watercolor painting course is recommended to the beginner who is willing to subject one's self to controlled and play.
