The vibrant timelessness in change intrigues me. This eternal rightness in painting is captured when active humanity engages with the force of nature to become a metaphor of deeper truth. I want to paint the secret of the creator’s heart hidden within the image and fill the whole page or canvas with its monumental profoundness.
I feel my accountability, as an artist is to guard that initial excitement with my subjects and the mysteries hidden within as a spiritual gift of revelation. With every painting there is a challenge to overcome the tarnish of the familiar and so I paint how I understand and feel things were meant to be, not merely copying how they are, devoid of spirit.
I love how color and the expressive mark can evoke a recognizable feeling, a nostalgic memory, or emotional qualities such as the smell of salt and balsam in the air. In both watercolor and oil paint I look for ways to embolden the color through traditional ways of causing the pigment to be brighter, richer, and more transparent. Careful watchfulness, attention to understated detail, movement, light, and the uniqueness of the atmosphere, are characteristics of my personality.
I approach my art openly and honestly as a discipline of earnest play before the face of God. My desire to make paintings that take on a life of their own is balanced with my overt conviction of biblical texts found in common regional settings. It is important to me that I succeed in giving the glory to God while illustrating a fuller, deeper, and clearer insight of truth and love to man.
